What the base rate move means for your mortgage

14 August 2026

Rate news is written for markets, not for the person paying the mortgage. On a 225,000 loan over 25 years, a quarter-point move is roughly 30 a month - real money, and nowhere near the number the headlines imply.

What matters more is when your fix ends. If that is inside the next year, the conversation worth having now is about timing, not about this month's announcement.
